>>>"Sandman is a comic by Neil Gaiman" would (I think) be
a correct phrasing.
>>>(Actually, I guess the term is 'graphic novel' since
it's now available as
>>>a bunch of bound books, but whatever.)
>>Generally, a graphic novel is meant to describe a book
that was originally
>>released in that format. Thus, Watchmen is not, since
it came out as twelve
>>seperate issues, while The Killing Joke is, since it was
a one-shot. The
>>term 'collected' is used to describe books that were
released in serial
>>format, and later published as one book.

>Makes sense to me. I keep hearing people talk about "the
Sandman graphic
>novels" or whatever, so now I can mock them and tell them
that "that's 'the
>collected Sandman'".

I tend to mock people who use the term anyway, as by
definition, a novel is in prose, which no comic can be (if
it were in prose, it wouldn't be a comic, though Cerebus
and others sometimes stretch these boundaries).

As for other comics: listen to these other folks's
suggestions. And read Lone Wolf and Cub for a good handle
on the Masterless Man.
