In France we have mainly "bande dessinnee", basically hardcover with a very
high quality paper. It's the equivalent of a bumper edition of a few comics.
The pages are bigger (A4) and there are between 45 and 70 pages. You can find
BD (for short) almost everywhere in France, and comic books only in
specialised stores. You can also find them in Germany, that's the format for
Tintin or Manara (in a very different style, though :). I think the proper
translation is "graphical novel".

What I don't like in hardcovers/bumper editions is that it's not a true
reprint. You miss the short stories (see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
and the letters. And things like that. It sucks.

There's definitely something awkward in the french book. People usually don't
notice where it comes from, but it certainly sounds weird. You also have to
take into account that french is much (MUCH) more verbose than english, so
you have to use more words to say the same thing, so you're more likely to
end up with a word containing a "e".
