I'll second on Mage, if only because it's good storytelling.

An excellent comic that got CANCELED <grr> was Wahoo Morris. If you can
find it in any form, it'd perform an excellent example for the intersection
of the occult underground with reality. Now, it's nowhere near as grim as
Sin City, but that's not necessarily a bad thing...
