Watching Unbreakable after reading this, I certainly know what you mean. I 
like the idea of the Left Hand Path being a road to power, but would it 
necessarily be the Villain?

Couched in occult terms, the path would probably start by recognizing the 
power of taboos and then intentionally and systematically violating those 
taboos. Aren't there a variety of real-world religions that do that? I know 
that I've read some "Satanistic literature" that is close to those kinds of 
ideas.
