The thing is that that is the hidden truth that almost everyone doesn't know about.  Most people in the setting have little or no clue what's going down with the IC and such, as I took it.  A couple of people are beginning to make good guesses, and the Ng tape gives some people a vague idea, but even that probably gets messed up.

For the longest time, I was expecting Mulder's ability to infallibly make wild guesses that turn out to be right (Scully: "There's been these people dying in Nowhere, Arkansas.  Evidence points to a psychotic killer." Mulder: "I think it's a giant humanoid bat monster, based on no evidence at all." Scully: "Humanoid bat monster?  I don't think so..." It's turns out to be a humanoid bat monster.) to be some sort of unnatural, perhaps psychic, power.  After a while, when the two started making jokes about it, I gave up on this theory and have more or less stopped watching.  none of that's really very well on topic, I guess.
