>Has anyone on this list EVER gotten a damage deposit back?

Funny you should mention that, since my roommate and I are just about to
take our former landlord to court... among other things, the damages report
lists a $50 "maintenance fee" which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the lease.
Of course, the scumbag is also charging us $60 for "new drip pans for the
stove and new doorstops."
Interestingly enough, the damages that we actually _did_ (a broken closet
door and some blown-up lightbulbs) weren't mentioned in the damages report.
From this I can only conclude that he said to his secretary "Charge them
for half the deposit and make up some crap. They're college students, they
won't care. No, don't bother actually doing an inspection, they seemed
like decent people and probably didn't screw up the place."

>I think people can sense when you're an honest, upright fellow,
>just looking to get by in life, trying to do the right thing, and cut you a
>break. Folks respond to my shining character and resolute moral fiber.

Ha. Ha. Ha.
This town is apparently founded on screwing the students out of as much
money as possible...

>...waiting to see if anyone can drag lost damage deposits back on topic...

...which segues nicely into my pitiful attempt to put this on topic.
In any small town that owes its existence/prosperity to outsiders (colleges
and military bases are the examples that come immediately to mind), the
locals will hate and despise the outsiders, and will go WAY out of their
way to cause them problems. Crafty GMs should be able to use this to
their advantage...
