Actually, my credit isn't spotless, as I learned when I bought the house
last summer. Check this out: While we're still living in the apartment,
the complex tells us "We're keeping your damage deposit, and you owe us
another $200 because we have to replace the carpet."

"Why do you have to replace the carpet?"

"Because you had a cat."

"Wait a minute: Didn't we pay you guys an extra $100 up front and $20 extra
a month because we had a cat?"

"You owe us $200 dollars."

I didn't pay them the $200 dollars.

When we were signing the papers for the house, the complex had reported us
to the credit companies as being deadbeats to the tune of $200.

"Don't worry," said the lawyers as we signed the mortgage. "They try that
trick on everybody. They can't do anything to you."

So here's a question. Has anyone on this list EVER gotten a damage deposit
back?

...waiting to see if anyone can drag lost damage deposits back on topic...
