I don't think that's odd at all.  If you have one idea of what mages in the
modern day are like ("Superheroes without capes who are much much more
powerful than normal human beings!"), you're less likely to accept a
different vision ("Ordinary folks who can do extraordinary things by paying
an extraordinary price.")

Another first!  The other night, I had a disturbing dream, woke up, fell
alseep again, and had a SECOND dream in which I was discussing the first.
This second dream quickly became disturbing as well.
