I'd go for some more modern stuff. John Prine has a grea tune called
Daddy's Little Pumpkin off of his Jesus: the Missing Years CD (the title
track is pretty damn funny as well combining references to Apocrypha with
references to the Beverly Hillbillies theme song and general goofyness). In
general everything that Prine Does is good and either funny, dark, or
touching. He's best live so that you can hear the story behind each of his
songs(the story to He Forgot it was Sunday is really good).

I'd also point you to Steve Earl and Emmylou Harris. Both real good.
Steve's tune More than I Can Do is a genuinely funny parody of stalker
songs. "I know that you changed the locks/ but it's more than I can do/ no I
can't sit home blue/ You said you're gonna call the cops/but I ain't gonna
run/ 'cause you're the only one/there's no way I can live without you" Also
on that album is South Nashville Blues "I got me a pistol and a hundred
dollar bill/ got everything I need to get me killed/them southside gals/well
they suit me just fine/as long as I got money they won't whine"
