Probably the most useful injury I've had for game purposes was doing a
faceplant while rollerskating. I somehow missed my nose and landed squarely
on my upper lip. I still bear a scar that looks like the Mercedes-Benz logo
right in the inward-curvy bit of the lip--it's one of the reasons I wear a
mustache.
Anyway, after accidentally locking the wheels of my right skate in the
wheels of my left skate, I went over like a felled tree. I was a little
stunned, and my lip was numb, but I was otherwise okay. I got up and skated
another half circuit around the rink before looking at the hand I'd put up
to my lip a moment before. It was covered in blood. My lip hurt, but it
was the kind of hurt that cuts straight through pain and into dull numbness.
The nerves in the area were completely overloaded. I didn't freak out until
I saw my own blood. (Incidentally, for most people, seeing their own blood
covering their hand when they didn't know they were bleeding should be a
Violence check, I think.)
Perhaps less useful than a busted lip is the time my back went out. I
was laid up for two weeks, unable to walk, and barely able to stand. That's
a hard pain to describe because it's simultaneously incredibly sharp, like
someone's driven a railroad spike into your vertebrae, but also diffuse,
causing a dull ache all over the lower back, with occasional flares of pain
in other places. When you try to stand, it feels like your spine is being
crushed in a vise. If someone got cracked in the back with a pipe, let's
say, that's what it might feel like.
I wish I could share the story about getting stung in the face by
hornets, but I only know that it happened because my mom told me about it.
I have no memory of it.
