There are some good oral history descriptions of traumatic injury in Stephen Ambrose's books, D-DAY in particular.  The "Getting hit by a baseball bat" metaphor is commonly employed for shrapnel and gunshot wounds.  He also relays the story of a paratrooper in such a hurry to cut himself free of his risers that he slices off a finger -- and only notices after he's found some cover.
