rl magickal hoo-hah: nope. skeptic. never even liked to play magic-users
in d&d or shadowrun. my beliefs lie somewhere between darwin and wilson
(the ant guy). ummm...right. my girlfriend and i have philosophical
discussions and she looks at me like i'm from another planet. i bought
unknown armies for a variety of reasons:
1) it's extremely open-ended. as the number of schools of magick is
virtually limitless (every adept could, conceivably, create their own),
there is a lot of room for creativity.
2) it's neat. i like the gritty, real-world setting (big fan of elomore
leonard and tarantino) and the magick aspect isn't pounded into your head
like in other games. some of these guys, even the good guys, seem to be in
it for the kicks...
3) i collect and read weird, unique and interesting games (mostly to learn
the craft of rpg design). talislanta and OTE are two of my favorites, as
are blue planet, underground (as a design excercise only), feng shui and
puppetland (i also love power kill but only because i am such an anti-gamer
gamer).
acceleromancy: yikes! i have this awesome image forming in my brain:
a cabal of acceleromancers waging a very nasty "war" against a cult of
velomancers...shiny chrome and hi-tech composites meet twisted slag and
blood-spattered rust. cross a '50's drag racing gang (T-Birds anyone?) with
something from mad max, add a bit of cronenberg (a race car enthusiast,
natch), a pinch of ballard and one highly-contested race track.
something like this appeals to me -- no power mongering or politics, no "an
old man staggers into the bar with a dagger in his back and a treasure map
in his hand. his last words are, "...my daughter!" games...just two rival
groups who are fighting 'cause it's something to do (see "the outsiders" for
inspiration). lotta room for character interaction, both within and between
the groups ("romeo and juliet" with squealing tires and burning oil?)...
wow. this seemed a lot more coherent before i started typing. oooh, yanni!
