> Of course, for real preteen nightmare fodder, "Willy Wonka" gets my vote.
Oh, my...then you would have really enjoyed the most recent showing I saw
of this movie.
It was an outdoor showing on a summer evening, where everyone laid out in
this field under the stars, as this sweet, adorable movie was shown on the
side of a building. Lots of parents, lots of kids, lots of people in
between smoking dope and getting boozed up. Anyway it was all a very
lovely evening, right up until the scene where Willy Wonka opens the doors
into his amazing candyland. Best part of the movie, right? Not in this
case.
Just a few blocks to the west of where the movie was showing, there's a
fish cannery. I swear, at just the moment Willy threw open that door, a
processing boat dumped a couple tons of chum and dogfish, and the breeze
carried it softly up the hill and over the audience. It was quite a
stunning moment of collective cognitive dissonance -- beautiful, colorful,
delicious candy...coupled with the foul stench of fish guts. It's a scene
that I'll remember fondly for years.
Gone again,
Ian
