I like the ideas people have had about relating faeries to humanity. What I had
in mind (and what I thought Michael originally had in mind) was the traditional
Seelie/Unseelie courts and all of that stuff. I think the tone of UA is
undermined when alien intelligences are introduced into the game. The occult in
UA, as I see it, is derived, controlled, and dictated by humanity. Otherworldly
beings are the focus of CoC. I think a UA game would start to resemble CoC a
bit too closely if the game became to focused on powers from beyond, so to
speak.
That being said, I don't think I'd add faeries to my UA game. They've gone out
of style in mainstream American culture; we have UFOs and Big Foot now. I guess
it's just a personal thing, but I can't see fairies in a gritty setting like
UA, unless they were modelled after Swanwick's "The Iron Dragon's Daughter."
