I just finished reading "Symphony" by Charles Grant, first book in his
Millenium Quartet. I would recommend it to anyone interested in modern
occult action.
Also, Sean Stewart has a book called "Resurrection Man", which is one of
the most impressive stories about the prices of power and ignorance,
with a delightful examination of a society where magick is accepted. He
wrote another book in the same world, and I think the name of it is
"Night Music", but I could be wrong.
On the comic book side of things, Hellblazer and The Invisibles have the
same sorts of themes running through them, Preacher and
Transmetropolitan have the hard-edged, nasty feel to the characters, and
Mage, Mage 2, and Grendel(the early stuff especially) might have been
written with the game in mind.
For a more horror-based take, the early Necroscope books by Brian Lumley
are also worth a look, although they tend to get silly after the first
one or two.
There's a couple more things lurking in my brain that might be good, but
they don't want to come out right now. I'll check my library when I get
home and see if I can list a few more ideas.
