Yikes, I'd never mention it on a first date. You brave 
soul, you. If I think someone's going to get completely the 
wrong end of the stick, I generally describe it as freeform 
amateur dramatics. It's not exactly cool, but it gets most 
peoples frame of reference away from "demon worshipping" 
and the like.

i can't speak for the american public, but the british

confused and think we're something to do with battle 
reenactment, or burst
into laughetr and treat you like a freak for the next few 
hours. i'm not
saying i'm ashamed of my hobby, but i've ruined a fair few 
first dates by
actually telling the truth when they ask what i do in my 
spare time ("oh, i
generally spend my weekends being the high priest toltan")
