Actually, if we do take this route, I have a suggestion for the artifact of
desire:

The Stone of War

I don't think I need to go into the possibilities I see in that.

But if the others are in, Greg mentioned he had an idea as to a plot he's
toying with.

Had an idea last night about your novel deal that I wanted to throw at
you...

You could do it from the standpoint that the main character is not a person,
but an object. You could, for example, base the entire novel around some
artifact and each chapter could describe how the artifact goes from one
persons possession to the next, etc. You could even have a prelude that
deals with the artifact in a historical sense, for example:

Let's say your using the Amelia Earhart Compass artifact from the
Pinfeathers scenario. Not that you *should* use that one, but I'll use it
here just for example.

Prelude: Would describe the last flight of Amelia. It would touch on how
important the compass is to her navigation and would end with her ascension
and her plane crashing into the ocean.

Chapter 1: Would start on an oil rig that inadvertently discovers the
wreckage of her plane. It details the recovery process and the examination
of the find and the contents of her plane. One item is, of course, her
compass. The end of this chapter is where elements of the Occult Underground
would be introduced. Like, an occult group comes to take the compass away
from the researches at the end of the chapter, which would then lead to...

Chapter 2: This would describe the group that recovered the compass from the
researchers. It would describe their views of the importance of the compass
and what they believe/intend it can be used for. Their ideas would be
different from the ideas/uses that other groups that will be presented in
latter chapters would have.

So, the book goes on, the artifact moving from one group to another.
