This is interesting; I'd almost say it's the other way around. 
I've heard the "pretenious snob" LARPer stereotypes, but I'd
think the "unshowered geek" stereotype would be more detrimental
to turn-out.

What does everyone else think?  The only way to predict this with
any certainty is to get a bigger sample than just us two.  (Maybe
I'll post it to a few forums, too...)
