The idea of sacrificing oneself for knowledge has been around for
rather longer than Christianity. While asceticism is partially based on
removing distractions, the more religious varieties of it also include
a sacrificial element. I'd also point out that in most theologies of
Christianity, Jesus wasn't sacrificing himself for _knowledge_, unlike
Odin in the Eddas.
