There's also an old SF story (title and author filed somewhere in the swamp
that is my memory, I'm afraid) about a man who is being protected by an
invisible alien.  At first, it's stuff like "Don't step of the curb!" just
in time to stop crossing in front of a lorry.  Then it changes to "Don't go
to New York next Tuesday" (even though the man wasn't planning too).  Then
it moves on to "Don't sneeze into a silk handkerchief.  That attracts the
Boozles."  "What are Boozles?".  "Oh, they're creatures which are attracted
to people we help, and try and kill them.  But you'll be alright so long as
you remember about the handkerchief"   and so on.
