Not only that, but in the version I've heard, he did it to himself, in one
of his numerous trials to gain wisdom (this ordeal gave him understanding
of the runes).

The translated quotation from whichever Edda I'm recalling has Odin
claiming to be "sacrificed to Odin, myself to myself."

This of course parallels orthodox Christian belief that Jesus was both a
sacrifice to God and God Himself.
