<p> This is a common issue with energy modeling tools and I don't
think that there is a "right" answer. Typically I try to draw the
building using the mid point of the walls. It means that the zone
volumes will be a little on the big side and that the thermal loss
area will be a little bit on the large side. For buildings with
very thick walls, that can become a problem but there are
challenges in creating transfer functions for thick walls anyway.
Quite a long time ago I did a building using the inside dimensions
and then again with the outside dimensions. Annually the energy
use was nearly identical between the two; certainly it was well
within the other uncertainties of the modeling assumptions.</p>

multizone buildings. I have made the CAD model on Sketch Up
and I moved on to TRNBUILD to define all the construction and
window layers. My question is the following:</p>

imported from Sketch Up do not have a thickness. I have
multiple adjacent areas, for whom I have defined the
construction layers as supposed, however, while reading the
Multi-Zone Building Tutorial, I have noticed that the
program only calculates the U-value for the layer. Since the
equations will need the input from the volume of the rooms,
how can I be sure that the layers are defined properly and
that I have the correct volume in the room?</li>
