Imane,

How you handle stairs will depend a bit on the building. In
larger buildings that have a stairwell then I would model the
stairwell as one (or perhaps a few) zones stacked vertically. I
would not bother to draw the doors that lead between the stair
well and the rest of the building; I would let Type56 treat them
as wall area.

If you are dealing with a residential building and the stairs
are open then energy will transfer more by natural convection than
by conduction. TRNSYS by itself does not model the up and
downflowing air through a stairway so you'd need to implement
either a TRNFlow or a CONTAM model in order to assess the quantity
of air transfer.

When I have had to deal with open stairs, I have modeled the
opening between floors as a massless surface with a very low
thermal resistance and have defined a coupling air flow rate. The
air flow rate is then calculated by CONTAM (Type97) and is passed
to Type56, which in turn passes the upstairs and downstairs
temperatures back to Type97.

kind regards,

David
