There is a basic list of references for Type56 in the
05-MultizoneBuilding documentation (section 5.4.7). In the US,
building energy modeling tools are "validated" by running them
through a series of tests that are described in ASHRAE Standard 140
(there is an analogous BESTEST standard as well). So long as the
results of a software fall within acceptable ranges as defined in
the Standard then the software is said to pass the Standard. The
range of acceptable results is defined by the results that were
obtained quite a few years ago by third parties (i.e. not
developers) running some industry standard software tools. A
previous version of TRNSYS is one of the industry standard software
tools that was used in setting the acceptable range for Standard140.
