A single-stage heat pump is either ON or OFF. There is no
variation on the speed of the compressor so the heat pumps capacity
is only a function of the inlet water conditions. In a two-stage
device, either there are two compressors or there is a single
compressor that can run at two different speeds. The heat pump's
capacity now depends upon the inlet conditions and on the speed of
the compressor. It basically has a "high heating/cooling" mode and a
"low heating/cooling" mode.<br>
