I typically ignore the doors in residential modeling.<br>
<br>
The problem with defining a door as a window is that since it is a
window, it will allow solar radiation to transmit into the
residence. Of course if you have a glass door on the house, that is
entirely appropriate. However, if you have an opaque door, it is
better to define the door as a different wall section. <br>
<br>
The following steps usually work for me in Trnsys3D, :<br>
<br>
1. create the zone that contains the exterior door and make sure
that the zone is active.<br>
2. draw the door, starting from the bottom edge of the zone. Once
you complete the door, Trnsys3d will "recognize" it as a window.<br>
3. with the zone still active, select the window surface (just the
bluish part, not the lines that define the size of the window).<br>
4. delete the surface - you should now have a wall with a big hole
in it.<br>
5. retrace the line that defines the top of the door - Trnsys3D
usually now "regnognizes" this as a door.<br>
<br>
Once you import the *.idf into TRNBuild, you're going to have to be
careful because both the "door" and the wall surrounding it will get
set as walltype EXT_WALL. You will need to define a wall
construction in TRNBuild for your door (probably using a single
"massless" layer) and then you will need to change the door surface
from walltype EXT_WALL to your newly created walltype "DOOR"<br>

This is a bit of a problem in the Trnsys3D plugin; the
developers are working on a solution. I have had some success
in breaking my wall up into a "wall" part and a "door" part
but this can be tricky because you don't want the door to get
recognized as a window. I then set the two parts as different
wall types and take care of correcting the construction in
TRNBuild. <br>
If there are not very many doors in your zone, I would
recommend that you just ignore them. I only took them into
account because I was simulating a garage that had well
insulated wall and completely uninsulated (very large) garage
doors.<br>
