Hi Catalina-

I think that Duncan's proposal is good.

If it is more advanced than that, say if you have some sort of trellis, or advanced shading mechanism, it can be simplified through good old geometry. I wrote something on this about two years ago: http://energy-models.com/blog/11-11-10/simplifying-shading-equest-and-trace-700

Basically, it comes down to simplifying virtually any shading device into 1 overhang (or fin)

However, Duncan's approach will probably work. (The main downside to the weighted average approach is that you don't necessarily get the full shading value at peak loads or in the summer months)

Good morning,

I'm trying to model aluminum shading devices that are not fins, nor overhangs. These are thin shading panels that vary in size and location due to architectural aesthetics on the facade. Does anybody know how to model something like this or represent it effectively in the model?
You may have to do a separate hand calculation to determine an adjusted SHGC value. ASHRAE Fundamentals 2009 chapter15 has some information regarding IAC correction values, etc. but I don't they cover what I see indicated below.

A rough estimate could be made as follows;

1) Estimate the average % of glass shaded during the year. This may require some geometry work regarding azimuths, solstices, etc.

2) Assign the shaded percentage of glass SHGC=0

3) Calculate a weighted average SHGC:

[(Area Glass Shaded * 0) + (Area Glass Unshaded * SHGC)] / Total Glass Area

Somebody please let me know if I am mistaken. Thanks.
