[Simergy-users] [External] RE: Functional Plenum Zones

Using the VAV System 7 example file, I tried to get one of the listed “plenum” zones to function as a return airflow path. It seems like I followed the instructions below for a supply plenum reasonably, but when I try to validate the “air loop diagram” I get “SRPF-1: This component is present in the diagram, but is missing from the project model. Please try to delete the component and drag and drop a new instance from the stencils.” Which I did a second time and I punched all the little save buttons, and got again.

Fred,

To make plena work (shared or dedicated), you need to do all of the following:

1)      When you create your building stories – do the following:

•         In the Create/Edit Building palette/”Building Stories” tab – select “Ceiling Plena”’ in ‘Plenum Configuration and also set the above ‘Ceiling Configuration’ (we used “Single zone” in our example below – to have a single shared plenum) --- See Image-1 below

•         Then click “Preview”, followed by “Save” --- to create your building stories
This will make the above ceiling spaces into plena that are available of use in the HVAC loop.  See Image-2 (note the Ceiling Plena highlighted in the tree)

2)      When making your Zone HVAC Groups

•         Include a supply plenum above Air Terminal – drag/drop from the stencil – just like the components (in our example, we used a Shared Supply Plenum).  See Image-3

3)      Assigning the Zone group to an Air Loop is just as before – but with one additional step

•         Select the Zone HVAC Group in the tree > right-click > “Assign to Air Loop”

•         In the Air Loop Diagram workspace > select the Plenum > select the appropriate Plenum zone in the Zone Name field of the Component Data (lower left).  In our example, this loop is conditioning the first floor, so the appropriate plenum zone is “Ceiling Plenum Zone 1-1”.  See Image-4 (note that it validates)

I’m just getting started and am trying the latest Simergy Pro. Can anyone tell me if return and supply plenum zones are really supported?

If so, is there some clear set of procedures for getting from the geometric “ceiling plena or voids” to airflow through them?

As far as I can tell, only the  ASHRAE System 7 model shows plenum zones under the “spatial zones” branch of the project tree. However none of these are referenced in the Zone HVAC Groups,  which requires an entry of a “shared” or “dedicated” plenum component between the zone outlet and the “supply” inlet. But when I’ve tried this, Simergy itself hangs or the model doesn’t run. The model as supplied runs, but the “plena” are just simulated as unconditioned zones/spaces when I examine the IDF.

I tried importing a E+ 8.0 sample idf with floor/supply and return plenums, and that didn’t go anywhere either.
