Yung,

In case you didn't know there is an IBPSA Urban Scale Simulation Research Committee chaired by Bing Dong and me. We are trying to have quarterly calls and are discussing trying to put together a white paper on the state of urban scale simulation. In our recent call we gave some

Anyone who wants to be added to the contact list should let either me or Bing Dong (Bing.Dong at utsa.edu<mailto:Bing.Dong at utsa.edu>) know and we can add you.

Ralph

Yung,

ASHRAE's Technical Committee 4.7 is discussing forming a subcommittee on "Urban-Scale Energy Modeling." If that goes through, some of the items we work on could potentially make it into the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.

There are many national labs, companies, universities, and utilities in this space with many technologies that target specific areas which are partially summarized in previous (and forthcoming) ASHRAE seminars:

Muehleisen, Ralph, Crawley, Drury, and Joshua New (Seminar Chair) (2017). "Seminar - Urban-Scale Energy Modeling, Part 6." To appear in Proceedings of the ASHRAE Conference, Long Beach, CA, June 30, 2017.

Choi, Joon-Ho, Sun, Kaiyu, and Joshua New (Seminar Chair) (2017). "Seminar - Urban-Scale Energy Modeling, Part 5." To appear in Proceedings of the ASHRAE Conference, Long Beach, CA, June 30, 2017.

New, Joshua R., Adams, Mark, Bhandari, Mahabir, Shrestha, Som, and Sanyal Jibonananda (2017). "Auto-generated Building Energy Models (AutoBEM) of Urban Morphologies and Analysis of Microclimate Interaction." Presented to the Urban Dynamics Institute Scientific Advisory Board, March 23, 2017. DOE's Building Technologies Office has an "Energy Transformation in Cities" initiative headed by Andrew Burr. There are post-workshop notes that summarize the challenges, tools, and other opportunities but I do not believe this has been publicly released yet. As part of that effort, several networks including:

  * Better Communities Alliance (BCA<https://betterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov/bca/partner-list>) - DOE's efforts to assemble relevant stakeholders from industry and partner cities to make buildings and communities more energy efficient.
  * Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN<usdn.org>) - a peer-to-peer network of city officials with a job title related to "sustainability."
  * 100 Resilient Cities (100RC<http://www.100resilientcities.org/cities#/-_/>) - Rockefeller Foundation effort for making cities resilient to physical, social and economic challenges.
  * Other - DOE, national labs, city governments, universities, companies, and utilities.

Subject: [Ibpsausa] Question to IBPSA chapters: Larger Scale Modeling

Hello fellow IBPSA friends and colleagues,

I was wondering if there's any chapter out there that's working with local non-profits or their city on community/city wide modeling. I'm not sure if this is more of a private contract thing, so that's a separated matter.

MIT's effort in Boston city-wide modeling is a good example to what I'm thinking of. Are other IBPSA chapter working with other cities on similar thing?

Thanks in advance,
