Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division has an
opening for a Research Scientist. This BTUS has roughly 80 research staff,
including scientists, technicians, students and visitors, all working on
the development and demonstration of new technologies for energy-efficient
residential and commercial buildings. The historic and core technology
areas of interest include, but are not limited to, lighting, windows &
daylighting, envelope materials, sensors and controls, and HVAC. A second
major focus of the group is in developing and deploying software and
simulation tools to understand the performance of these technologies both
individually as well as integrated into whole-building systems. A new
direction for this department is to expand from single buildings to
consider groups of buildings, looking at the performance of campuses,
neighborhood districts, and larger-scale systems at the urban level.
What You Will Do:
-
Execute Scout analyses and present results in support of Building
Technology Office (BTO) projects including the HIT Catalyst, BTO FOAs,
BTO goal tracking, and other BTO programs.
-
Initiate, prioritize, and coordinate development of new Scout measures.
-
Support, maintain, and as needed, extend implementation of the Scout
engine.
-
Coordinate the development, maintain and support of Scout web services.
-
Coordinate the development, maintain, and support of a Scout technology
adoption model.
-
Coordinate with EIA on the use of CBECS/AEO data and the potential
alignment of Scout and CBECS/AEO methods and procedures.
-
Develop solicitation, conduct outreach, and assist in development of
phase I “pitch” videos.
-
Oversee phase I project selection.
-
Coordinate prototype development assistance (e.g., TopCoder serviceS).
Work with project teams on prototype specification and development.
-
Coordinate phase I “demo day”.
-
Conduct research on the simulation and analysis of energy performance of
buildings. Participate in on-going research projects related to the
simulation of energy use in buildings
-
Participate in developing new proposals related to the analysis of
energy use and buildings, including behavioral aspects on energy
performance.

Publish research results in scientific journals.
What Is Required:
-
Minimum of 2 years of experience in development and/or support of
technical analysis tools.
-
Detailed knowledge and experience with architectural, electrical, and/or
mechanical systems in buildings.
-
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
-
Advanced architecture or engineering degree or related area relevant to
building technology.
-
Strong journal publication record.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
-
Experience managing competitive solicitations and programs.
-
Participation in industry associations such as ASHRAE, IES, etc.
