You are invited to enter a building design competition with a difference!
The purpose of the competition is to promote awareness of a new breed of
optimisation tools which can help with decision making at any stage of the
design process. These tools provide powerful techniques for identifying
optimal designs that meet potentially conflicting design requirements such
as minimising environmental impact while also minimising development costs
and at the same time satisfying constraints such as providing minimum levels
of occupant comfort and daylighting.

The competition is organised by the ADOPT
<http://www.iesd.dmu.ac.uk/%7Eadopt/wiki/doku.php>  research group:

Competition Launch Webinar <https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/206716857>

The competition will be launched through a free Webinar
<https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/206716857>  at 15:00 on 24 October
2012. The webinar will provide more information on the competition and a
demonstration of the optimisation tools developed by the ADOPT
<http://www.iesd.dmu.ac.uk/%7Eadopt/wiki/doku.php>  Team, including the new
DesignBuilder Optimisation facility. At this point you will be able to
register for the competition and receive:

*	A full DesignBuilder 60 day license.
*	Detailed description of the functional specification, design
objectives and constraints.
*	DesignBuilder templates containing the allowed options.
*	A DesignBuilder Base case example model meeting the functional
specification.

 The competition is open to all students and professionals from any country.

If you were unable to access the webinar on Wednesday 24th October due to
the limitation on places we apologise. The limitation resulted in only 100
people being able to watch at a time but needless to say we will raise that
limit for the next webinar in a few weeks time, which will be to launch the
optimisation software beta tests.

The recordings of the Webinar have been uploaded ready for viewing. You can
find them on the main competition web page:

http://www.designbuilder.com/designcompetition

Registration for the competition is now open from the same web page. You
must register before 9 November to take part.

Competition Brief

The winning competition entry will be the one that best meets the functional
specification provided and at the same time:

*	Minimises operational carbon emissions.
*	Minimises construction cost
*	Satisfies the comfort criteria based on ASHRAE 55
*	Satisfies the minimum daylighting requirement criteria.

The Design Specification

Competition entrants will be provided with a site layout including a plot on
which the design must be placed. You will also be provided with an example
building model which meets the “functional specification”, but is not
necessarily optimised for performance. The site layout and an example which
meets the specification are shown below.

floorplan

*	The building is to be positioned within the plot boundary on a site
near London
*	You have freedom to create any building form, internal layout and
facade configuration
*	You should provide 3000m2 office areas and a minimum of 20% service
areas
*	Predefined template options will be provided for:

*	Construction materials
*	Glazing and shading systems
*	Lighting o HVAC and Natural ventilation
*	Activities

*	The constraints on occupant comfort mean you have freedom to specify
any control strategy for the heating and cooling system controls, but you
must use the “Simple HVAC” option and select from the predefined HVAC
templates.
*	All options are costed allowing the DesignBuilder cost model to
assess total construction costs.

Submission

Competition submissions will comprise a DesignBuilder model configured
optimally and a form supporting the submission, explaining your key design
decisions. The closing date for submissions is 18 December 2012.

Selection

The competition entries will be judged through a 2 stage process:

Stage 1 The optimal entries are identified as those lying closest to the
“Pareto Front” as illustrated in the diagram below.

Stage 2 Our panel of experts will select the winners from the optimal
designs based on practical and aesthetic criteria.

*	1st Prize £500 + “Advanced Simulation” package (worth £3199).
*	2nd “Advanced Simulation” package (worth £3199).
*	3rd “Architectural Simulation” package (worth £999).

The outstanding entries will be announced on 9 January 2013 and awarded at
an optimisation workshop to be held late January 2013.
