Thanks Chris,<br>
An interesting analysis and comparison of the 2. A little
misleading in some areas.<br>
"eQUEST is a building energy simulation tool so comprehensive that
it would be <br>
useful to all design team members, yet so intuitive any design <br>
team member could use it, in any or all design phases, including <br>
schematic design. eQUEST is well named because it provides <br>
something the buildings industry has been looking for, but has been
<br>
unable to find a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use building energy <br>
analysis tool powerful enough to address every design team <br>
member's domain (e.g., architectural, lighting, mechanical) but <br>
simple enough to permit a collaborative effort by all design team <br>
members in all design phases."<br>
It is comprehensive but everything else is the holy grail that will
never be found.<br>
One of his thesis advisors was Marlin Addison. the eQuest guru of
training.<br>
The output comparisons with EnergyPlus, eQuest and actual were
interesting. I would assume<br>
EnergyPlus was limited by the front end that was being used.<br>
Both programs, I assume, because I haven't taught myself EnergyPlus
yet, make it easy to get a "result". Question is does it mean
anything? Anyone who has ever used eQuest to simulate an actual
building and energy bills would be amazed at the eQuest curve fit
with actual billing. Believe me that wasn't a one pass effort!
Easily north of 100 hours.<br>
For anyone in the know, both these programs are just tools and
output is dependent on the skill and knowledge of the operator and
dangerous in the hands of a newbie. But don't despair, equest-users
group has some great talent going where no human has gone before
with eQuest. The superb helpfulness of the group is what really
makes eQuest an asset. I assume/hope EnergyPlus has the same talent
as I will one day be an EnergyPlus newbie, but not a modelling
newbie.<br>
All in all though I thought it was an excellent thesis, 2010 not
withstanding. I think most of the issues are still in play today
and will be in 2025.<br>
