Brian and everyone, I had a chance to fiddle around with the issue of adding a boiler to a ground loop heat pump system and I think it can be managed by creating a water loop heat pump system with one fluid cooler and 2 boilers. I am thinking that: 1) if the regular water circulation loop parameters can be changed to match ground loop parameters and 2) one boiler and fluid cooler equipment sizes are increased and efficiencies are increased until they use very little power, you can use them to represent the ground loop, rather like a lake well. That leaves you with a regular boiler that you can also use. You can then dictate what equipment goes on when with the circulation loop equipment controls and load management buttons.

This model will not give anyone sizing information about the ground loop itself, but it would show the influence of a boiler added to a ground loop. I haven't had time to work all of it out, but the results that I got from the one day I got to spend experimenting with the model looked promising.

Hope that helps and if somebody has some time and can finish my experiment, please get in touch.

As far as I am aware, there is no way to do this directly. The workaround discussed on this list recently was to add baseboard heating with the condensing boiler and then carefully schedule when that loop is in operation. Certainly not the same thing as your ground loop return temperature profile will be incorrect. You could perhaps also set your ground loop to lake/well so you can explicitly set the return water temperature if the condensing boiler is in operation for a significant portion of the year.

I really hope that this system type gets added to future versions -- it is a very good design option.

On 11/10/2011 7:07 AM, Hector Lamprea wrote:
