<font size="+1">One thing to remember is when it comes time to build
the building you have to be able to buy the window you have
created. There are only a few major glass manufactures in the
world. I have found the selection in eQuest to be a fairly good
representation of what is available on the market. You will find
pretty much all the window manufacturers buy the glass from the
majors as a finished unit, ie glass, coatings spaces and gas
fill. They make the frames and this is where all the variation is
in the market, maybe 10,000 manufacturers in North America. There
was a later post on the glass spacers. Part of this depends on
the frame manufacturer, some bury the edge of glass further into
the frame than others reducing its impact on overall U value. The
spacer material matters more in cold climates but it's effect has
more impact on allowable indoor humidity than U value there as
well. When it is -30 outside you can have a higher RH inside
before you get condensation on the glass. In the summer when it
is 95 out there is only a 20 degree delta T so the spacer will
have little effect.<br>
As far as baseline I'm more driven by the local codes than 90.1.
Typically it is a standard thermopane with a metal spacer and air
fill. Some code jurisdictions now require Low E with argon fill
as the standard base glass. I would use that if that code was
where the building was going. 90.1 was designed as a world wide
standard. You still need to adjust it according to local codes
which when it comes to building the building will have
precedence. So in some areas you will need to adjust the baseline
model upwards to give a true economic value to your design for the
customer to base his decisions on. The customer will want cost
additions and payback period. When it comes to bragging rights
you put your model at the base 90.1 so everyone's numbers are
coming off the same base. lol.<br>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">eQuest
treats the glass and
the frame as separate items. They are totally different

There is much more to window glass than just insulation
value. I normally
create windows and frames inside eQuest. You could then
just check with
window6 to confirm your overall value. I don't believe many
people are having
success importing window data from other programs.<br>
