switched a recent project I did with aluminum spacers to insulated
in the windows only. The LV-D report showed no difference, that
could be because it reports the window U-value. The LS-C report
showed a small difference in the Window Glass + Frame, 19.500
kBTU/h for the aluminum, </font><font size="+1">out of a building

The building had 173 SF of windows in 14,492 SF of wall and 768
SF of skylights in 7,616 SF of roof, a small percentage. Also,
most of the windows were 2'W x 5'H, 10 SF, if the edge effect is
1" around the frame that is 1.15 SF, 11%, or 19 SF of 173 SF glass
in 14,492 sf of wall. If your edge effect is R-1 in aluminum and
R-3 in insulated in a R-20 wall it becomes a very minor heat
loss. In an all glass building it would be the nearly the same
except if you spent some money on glass you might have 14,492 SF
at R-4. The edge effect would still only apply to 19 SF.<br>
The main effect as I mentioned earlier is to allow higher
humidity levels in the winter in a cold climate without damaging
surfaces below the window with condensation. It shows that
windows suck when it comes to insulating, edge effect or not.
Residentially it has a big effect, by spending an extra $12 on a
$400 window you get an insulated spacer and argon fill, taking
your glass from R-2 to R-4.2 but the wood frame will last 20 years
instead of 5 or 8 because the condensation won't rot out the
bottom of the frame. Installation is more important, if you have
a 1/16" gap around the window frame you just put in a R-4 window
and a 3.24" square hole in your R-20 wall.<br>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">1.
You can define curbs only for exterior windows and
skylights, not for interior windows.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">2.
If the CURB-HEIGHT is zero no curb calculations will
be performed.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">3.
The curb area is <b>not</b> subtracted from the
associated exterior wall area.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">4.
Each hour, the program adds the effect of a wind
speed-dependent outside air film to the user
specified CURB-CONDUCT.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">5.
The various elements of a curb (top, bottom, side,
dividers, etc.) may have different conductances. In
this case, CURB-CONDUCT should be an area-weighted
average of the different elements.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">6.
The program finds the overall window conduction by
adding curb, frame, edge-of-glass, and
center-of-glass contributions. Thus, all three of
these contributions are included in each of the
following report quantities:<br>
"Window Conduction" in summary reports
LS-B, LS-C, LS-E, and LS-F;<br>
"Window U-Value" and "Window Area" in
verification report LV-D and LV-H;<br>
WINDOW hourly report variable #1, "Window
U-Value".<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">7.
A WINDOW multiplier also multiplies the curb area.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">8.
Window fins and overhangs shade the curb as well as
the glazing.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">9.
Shading devices, like blinds and drapes, that you
specify using the WINDOW keywords SHADING-SCHEDULE
and CONDUCT-SCHEDULE, affect only the glazed part of
the window. They do not affect the heat conduction
through the curb.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;">10.
If the window has a setback, the curb is also set
back by the same amount.<o:p></o:p></p>
