could be because it reports the window U-value. The LS-C report
showed a small difference in the Window Glass + Frame, 19.500
kBTU/h for the aluminum, out of a building

The building had 173 SF of windows in 14,492 SF of wall and 768
SF of skylights in 7,616 SF of roof, a small percentage. Also,
most of the windows were 2'W x 5'H, 10 SF, if the edge effect is
1" around the frame that is 1.15 SF, 11%, or 19 SF of 173 SF glass
in 14,492 sf of wall. If your edge effect is R-1 in aluminum and
R-3 in insulated in a R-20 wall it becomes a very minor heat
loss. In an all glass building it would be the nearly the same
except if you spent some money on glass you might have 14,492 SF
at R-4. The edge effect would still only apply to 19 SF.
The main effect as I mentioned earlier is to allow higher
humidity levels in the winter in a cold climate without damaging
surfaces below the window with condensation. It shows that
windows suck when it comes to insulating, edge effect or not.
Residentially it has a big effect, by spending an extra $12 on a
$400 window you get an insulated spacer and argon fill, taking
your glass from R-2 to R-4.2 but the wood frame will last 20 years
instead of 5 or 8 because the condensation won't rot out the
bottom of the frame. Installation is more important, if you have
a 1/16" gap around the window frame you just put in a R-4 window
and a 3.24" square hole in your R-20 wall.
