Using eQuest is like using a sledge hammer to kill a mosquito for
residential. What homeowners are willing to pay is related to
energy credit they can get from the government and I have found it
normally means less than $500. You can' get anything done in
eQuest for this amount. The only way to handle it is with a
residential specific program. In Canada the norm is HOT2000, in
the US REScheck, http://www.energycodes.gov/rescheck/download.stm
. You can get them running pretty quick and the outputs are
designed for the government incentive programs. As far as making
money at it it is a tough slog. In Canada you get $450 for an
audit, which includes going to the home and taking measurements
and doing an assessment of what is there, loading the house into
the program, doing a report for the grant, and a return trip to
check the renovation and sign off on it. Pretty marginal. These
software programs are also used in new construction to show the
home meets the current energy codes in the state or province to
get the building permit. Most of the work/pay is in the home
design not in providing the report. Margins in this area are
better but you will do much better in the eQuest field. There is
a shortage of qualified people and a lot of work to be done.
This might be a bit of an odd question, but how much do most
energy models charge for residential modeling? is it the typically
the same rates as any other modeling?
