The 12 day schedules written into INP files from the wizard are indeed
monthly schedules. They provide more variation than simply on/off (by
building type) and the schedules are assigned based on which (of 10)
latitude bin the building is located in (to account for variation in
sunrise/sunset times).<br>
This mechanism was put in place long before DOE-2 provided photocell
controls via the SCHEDULE command. Utilizing the (relatively new)
photocell control options in the SCHEDULE command would indeed be a
good way to simplify your exterior lighting schedules, but you might
also want to take a look at the hourly values within the existing
schedules in case any variation there makes sense to retain for your
particular building model.<br>

ensure that I understand what everything means and to avoid the
automatic creation of superfluous schedules, etc., I am composing
entirely in the .inp file using notepad and using eQuest-generated code
as a guide.</span></font></div>
