[Equest-users] Secondary Chilled Water Loop has zero design flow

Morteza,

There is a fundamental difference in the definition of a “secondary” loop between eQUEST and ASHRAE 90.1.

In ASHRAE and customarily, a primary-secondary loop configuration involves one set of pumps for the chiller (or boiler) and a second set to pump through the building. [cid:image002.png at 01D6CD3F.FB514790]
Image from pumpsandsystems.com

This can be primary-secondary can accomplished in eQUEST with a single circulation loop by adding pumps to the chiller as well as to the chilled water circulation loop.

In the wizard:
[cid:image004.png at 01D6CD3F.FB514790]

Which results in this configuration in the detailed interface. CHW Loop Pump is the secondary loop pump while Chlr1 … Pump is the primary loop pump.

The primary pumps can also be defined and added to the chiller in the detailed interface under the Loop Attachments tab.

If only the circulation loop pumps or the pumps as a child to the chiller are defined you have a primary system. if both the circulation loop pumps and the chiller child pumps are defined in eQUEST then you have a primary-secondary loop configuration. So – to meet the primary-secondary configuration required by ASHRAE you need only define chiller pumps and chilled water loop pumps.

By contrast, you can add subloops within eQUEST. These subloops allow you to separate loads or carry loads at different temperatures. For example, often we will put snow melting on a separate heating subloop so that load can easily and explicitly be called out. Unfortunately, these subloops are termed ‘secondary’ loops in eQUEST which seems to me to be creating the confusion. The initial message suggests a chilled water subloop was created with no loads on it. That triggered the message that eQUEST could not size the subloop. My recommendation is to remove the subloop and ensure that chilled water loop pumps and chiller pumps have both been defined.

Regards,

Brian

CAUTION: EXTERNAL SENDER
Danny,

Thank you for your suggestion.

Regarding Appendix G requirements (G3.1.3.10) I was wondering if I should select the Secondary Chilled Water Loop for all the chilled water cooling coils (AHUs).

I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this.

Hi Morteza,

There is no system under "Secondary Chilled Water Loop" in your energy model.

Selecting the "Secondary Chilled Water Loop" for a chiller water
cooling system will fix the problem. Or you can delete the "Secondary
Chilled Water Loop" to fix it.
