[Equest-users] Fwd: Equest training

It’s up as of this moment, from Kansas City.

I can echo Bill’s understanding as stated. If in the future you run into needing to access doe2.com and the server appears to be down, contacting the owner (James J. Hirsch & Associates) is typically the most expedient path forward.

  * The email Jeff lists on the website is Jeff.Hirsch at DOE2.com<mailto:Jeff.Hirsch at DOE2.com>, for reference.
  * The same can be said for onebuilding.org --> contacting Jason Glazer directly (jglazer at gard.com<mailto:jglazer at gard.com>) is usually the fastest possible remedy.

Come to think of it, it would seem to be mutually beneficial for each site to reference the other in this regard, and to better connect the onebuilding.org mailing list community to the doe2/eQuest users out there… a thought for both site owners.

As for training - I can think of 3 basic approaches to finding a teacher outside of your existing bubble/resources:

  1. Soliciting / Openly Seeking training on these lists is one passive way to garner the attention of those providing training services (who also have time/motivation to take on a new client, and the wisdom to keep a pulse on activity here). You may have already or might eventually receive some emails in response off-list. Being a little more specific about your location and desires in terms of topics may facilitate responses.
  2. Directly seeking training by contacting peers in the industry holding the knowledge you’re looking for is for many the only way you’re going to acquire specific, deep/specialized skillsets above and beyond “introductory” and high-altitude coverage. Reaching outside your bubble can be a tricky conversation to navigate, especially when involving those who aren’t used to professionally balancing such propositions against existing work:life obligations. You might simplify such new relationships if you can stomach just asking for their availability and ‘billing rate’ via their employer.
  3. If you are struggling to network with someone that can provide exactly what you’re looking for, I think it’s appropriate here to also mention the only ‘hubs’ I’m aware of for energy simulation trainers (specifically covering eQuest) is energy-models.com. I am not personally affiliated with nor providing any active business or community activity there (despite appearances), but the resource is I think unique to my experience in helping to connect trainers/trainees within the industry for doe2/eQuest in particular.

Hope this helps!

~Nick

doe2.com, right? Maybe the routes are compromised. I haven't seen that in ages.

The doe2.com website is still being maintained but there have been issues with the server. There are plans to bring up a new server.

eQUEST is still very useable (stable, capable and free) and I think it should be considered as one of the tools-in-the-drawer for most energy modeling workflows. The new version with DOE-2.3 has improved capabilities with DOAS and VRF with the same output formats, so it is a great tool to use for clients that are familiar and comfortable with it.

Between the eQUEST wizards and the extensive help documentation, you can get started easily without having to take formal training, especially if you are already familiar with energy modeling. I'm not sure who is doing training in California. karpmanconsulting.net holds occasional classes in the greater NYC area.

Best regards,

~Bill

Interestingly enough, eQuest appears to be unavailable due to the DOE2 web site being out of service.

I am aware of the various issues regarding eQuest, including Energy-Plus being the replacement, etc., but some potential clients are familiar with eQuest and I am trying to get back up to speed (the majority of my work has been done using EnergyPro).

So is eQuest just permanently out of service and unusable?

I am looking for recommendations for Equest training. What would you recommend?
