[Equest-users] LEED DES Guidelines: Process Chilled Water and Steam

Hello,

Recently, we have completed one million sq.mt Industrial Building LEED
compliance modeling which has been awarded with 16.5% overall energy cost
savings. I would share some of the learning on process load part:

   - Check CIR ID: 10237 <http://in.usgbc.org/content/li-10237>-
   Manufacturing Unit - Process dominant CIR- Modelling Strategies- This gives
   some guidance on how to model process part and take savings in the
   industrial facility
   - In the above mentioned project, there were manufacturing
   machines supplied with 35 MWc of cooling load which is process load
   separate from Building comfort requirements. This has been done by
      - by creating process chillers as designed in Proposed and as per
      ASHREA 90.1 in Base case
      - Kept the load, schedule same in both cases and savings should be
      claimed only on the performance parameters (COP, w/gpm for pumps
and gpm/hp
      for cooling towers etc.)
   - To arrive at correct schedule, we conducted some interviews with the
   existing plant personnel and tried to get some operational profile of the
   running facility. We then finally made some calculations and assumptions to
   arrive at *would be* schedule for the process machines.
   - The project had 15MW of process heating via hot water. The same was
   also been supplemented with 5 MW of waste heat recovery from industrial Air
   Compressor to provide heat. To claim this, proposed case was set up as per
   design case and Base was accordance with the ASHRAE 90.1 requirements. The
   waste heat recovery was directly modelled in the simulation program (E+)
   where priority was given to the Air compressor waste heat availability and
   remaining from the boilers.
   - The above project has been done in EnergyPlus. Interestingly i have
   also completed similar kind of project in past in eQuest though 1/10 of the
   built-up area compared to above. In eQuest, you could create chilled water
   loop and assign process load as gpm and load; i guess.

This doesn't address all of your queries but this might give you some
directions to proceed further with.

I hope other experts might chime in to enlighten us more on this.
