[Equest-users] 90.1-2013 Baseline Constructions

Mike,Nick,

The baseline model I did for Climate zone 8 here in Alaska was a little over a year and a half ago but hopefully this will help.

Per the wording in ASHRAE 90.1 (2007), you were allowed to model the baseline to match the existing conditions prior to renovations as long as a few conditions were met (this was specified in Appendix G – I want to say in section 8 of the table). The proposed would be modeled per the design docs.

So for us, it was a little more straightforward modeling the baseline and probably made more sense in that the actual cost savings result was more put in context considering the state of the original building and its ancient systems (an army base chapel constructed 1942).

I did have the advantage of messing up at first though - as Nick might recall.

Our LEED guy had me model the baseline first using 2013 version of ASHRAE 90.1 but since we were applying for LEED NC 2009 we only had to comply with 2007 version of ASHRAE 90.1 (less stringent). I caught it early enough that I was able to go back and push through it.

But I did notice the 2013 construction types and raw numbers in Appendix A (where climate zone 8 is concerned) were pretty beefy. It’s no longer possible to just add a 5” EIFS system to a wall and surpass the baseline values like it’s nothing. In climate zone 8 you have to think outside of the box – adding additional vapor barriers, interior insulated wall furrings, etc…

In Alaska though, I see the newer versions of ASHRAE pushing the issue towards improving the existing heating systems (less just adding insulating systems to retain it). We really need this! Overinsulating a building is one of the most common things I’ve seen up here. Whatever your approach to energy savings it has to be multi-faceted and well-conceived.

I’d say most buildings here in Fairbanks run on fuel/oil or 40 year old steam systems (throwbacks to the Alaska Pipeline days). Most private residences include wood or pellet stoves to supplement the high cost of fuel oil too and it doesn’t help the air quality.

In a 3000 square foot building a 5 star energy rated home can burn 6-7 gallons a day of no.2 fuel/oil in -30F. You can do the math on cost.

Local municipalities have been installing infrastructure for natural gas (which is supposedly up to 35% cheaper than no.2 fuel/oil) but we still have a long way to go.

Hi Mike,

Here attached is something I consider a “public” resource that I’ve help develop to some extent but has roots in being traded across these lists in years past. I believe at this point it is inclusive of every zone’s opaque constructions as prescribed via Appendix A/G, excepting Zone 8 roofs & exposed floors.

Perhaps some individual(s) who have done work in Alaska over the past year or so has completed the set and can share (wink wink at a select few of you…)?

I haven’t crossed checked to be certain, but I believe 90.1-2010 is fully matching 90.1-2007 in regards to opaque envelope prescriptions so this would be ready to go in that circumstance. That may also be the case for 2013 (fully or in part). If there are some updates to the prescribed layers and/or insulation levels for one or more zones, you could likely use this as a helpful template to update for a new ready-to-import INP reference, possibly sharing your efforts in the same spirit!

Kind regards, and happy new year!

~Nick

Hello eQUEST Users,
I'm wondering if anyone has created envelope constructions for the ASHRAE 90.1-2013 baseline that they would be willing to share? Or does something like this exist where I can download an input file?
Thank you,
Mike Campbell
