Hi Talal,

A few quick pointers:

·         Considering your intent to keep this a simple model:  Unless you have a very good reason for engaging the compliance rulesets (LEED, 90.1)… I advise you to set the jurisdiction to “- other -" in the first wizard project data screen to avoid unnecessary complexity & erroneous cautions/warnings/errors in your model:

Also, once past wizards, ensure “Code & Version” within “Project Properties” at the top of the component tree is set to “- none -"

·         To tell the wizards your basement shell is below grade, switch the associated 0 and 1 inputs here (check & further adjust position inputs if needed based on the resulting 3D view).  

·         To intelligently “pre-populate” the activity/usage/occupancy inputs for a given shell at a high level (achieving the distinction between “office” / “multifamily” / “retail” building occupancy types), you can utilize the “Building Type” dropdown in the same initial wizard screen for each shell.  Note this will probably require you to re-assign the floorplate geometries & other inputs to follow, however.

·         Since your floors do not have unique floorplates/zoning presently, I would advise considering defining fewer shells with multiple floors to simplify your inputs.  

·         In any case, be mindful you don’t create “sandwiched” exposed roof and ground floor surfaces along the way (pay attention to screen 3 inputs for each shell).

·         Even though you want this to stay simple, I advise you to consider at minimum core+perimeter zoning in the 2nd screen for each shell to begin to capture more realistic system behavior for a building of this size. 

·         I presume Toronto is the closest weather file to Ottowa in the CWEC library, so that’s why your building landed there for simulation.  You can probably most quickly get an Ottowa-specific file downloaded for simulation with this wizard input combo:  

After some of the above improvements, you’ll need to explore the simulation results further & qualify for yourself/others why the electricity consumption in particular seems low (compared to what, to start)?  From there you can come up with further inputs/adjustments to get your simulation where it needs to be, for your purposes.  I do notice you have pretty large baseboard being generated (in turn heating via gas boilers, not electricity) which are picking up a majority of your building’s space heating needs in lieu of the electric heatpump heating you’ve specified.  Could be a place to start.

Dear eQUEST community,

I’m a student using eQUEST to model a building for an engineering project. I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible since I mostly want to focus on the electricity aspect.

The building is a 6 story mix of retail for the first floor, office space for the second and third, and residential for the rest. Also there is a basement floor for storage space (I am not sure how to make the basement floor appear to be underground).

Some problems that I am having: 

-          Changing Area type to Residential (Multi family dwelling) in the Residential floors

-          Changing the weather file to Ottawa, ON instead of Toronto

-          The results view shows very low numbers for the electricity consumption (788 KWh for the year)

BLDG-SIM: eQUEST 3-65

BLDG-RATE: LEED

I have enclosed a zip file of the PD2 that I’m working on. I would appreciate some feedback in addition to tips that will take me to the next level

Please bare in mind that I have just started using eQUEST and I’m mostly using the DD wizard.
