Hi Keith,
Based on square footage is not that a great help.
Rather based on building energy demand can be an easy way.
The building peak load for normal occupied and unoccupied hours can be a
better way.
I mean to say that supplying the energy is not that a great deal, rather
meeting the demand and for suitable usage like avoiding not able to meet
the building peak load can be an issue as per me.
See, for emergency one can have batteries to store and supply.
So supply has to be met.
Avoiding a heck and meeting the various building energy demand can help.
I will point out the general flaws in solar PV cells:
1. It can't be generated for whole year.
2. It's efficiency is less near around 10 %age.
3. It requires big area to meet the demand.
4. It requires numerous batteries to supply in off season.
My prior building usage concept was to have met the demand.
Suppose for hospital we need 24 hours energy supply so it can be that it
should not be on solar PV or it can be on solar PV for the summer season.
Additionally, if there is an office building so the supply can be for
normal occupied hours. Again one can supply solar PV or
general electricity as per the solar PV capacity for occupied and
unoccupied hours.
So the off season concept is that when there is no solar insolation then
we may have to supply by normal grid supply electricity.
Again, if there is a school then one can supply for normal occupied and
vacated periods.
Hence the demand concept can be that to have the electricity supply for the
total number of occupied hours without shut down.
See, my answers can be not that greatly helpful so one can supply any
number of units to any building and having had avoiding the general lacking
of electricity.
My suggestions:
1. Try to increase the solar PV area and meet the whole building whole
campus demand.
2. For this we need to increase the number of batteries to store for off
season.
3. The off season can be the winter season when there is not much solar
insolation.
4.One can have a DG set for meeting the demand. This can also help.
5. Also one can have a help from having better low energy
demand equipments with high efficiency and LED lighting to have less
building's energy consumption.
6. Try to have poly crystalline solar cells to have higher efficiency.
7. Try to have proper maintenance of solar PV plant to have
better efficiency.
These are my advises.
Thanks,
Sharad.Kumar.
