Performance paths of building energy standards such as 90.1’s
Appendix G, Title 24’s ACM, and RESNET HERS require modelers to
follow “rulesets” that describe how building energy models should
represent the building design and a reference model to compare
against. These rulesets are complicated and subject to
interpretation. ASHRAE Standard 229P is motivated by the desire to
improve the rigor and consistency of ruleset application, to
reduce the cost of performance‐path compliance submittal review,
and, in doing so, to encourage the adoption and implementation of
performance‐based codes. Standard 229P defines a schema that
describes the building models in simulation‐engine neutral and
ruleset-neutral format. Once simulation software starts to export
this file format, another piece of software called a Ruleset
Checking Tool can automatically compare the exported files and
determine if the rules in the ruleset were followed. This will
significantly reduce the effort for reviewing simulation-based
compliance.

To support this workflow, Standard 229P defines the following
using 90.1-2019 Appendix G as an example:

The Ruleset Evaluation Schema

Compliance requirements and tests for building performance
modeling software that exports models in ruleset evaluation
schema format.

Compliance requirements and tests for a Ruleset Checking Tool.
