“advanced” building energy simulation workshop at Pacific Energy
Center, downtown San Francisco on Wednesday and Thursday, 17 – 18 June 2009.
The workshop is being lead by Dr Mahabir Bhandari of DesignBuilder Software
(USA) and PC Thomas of Team Catalyst Pty Ltd (Australia). Both personnel have
extensive experience in the use and teaching of building energy simulation
programs. Participants will use the DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus suite extensively
over the two days. <span style="font-family: tahoma,new york,times,serif;">Dr </span></span><span style="font-family: tahoma,new york,times,serif;"><span class="hl">Tian</span> Zhen</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: tahoma,new york,times,serif; color: black;" lang="EN-AU"><o:p></o:p></span><span style="font-family: tahoma,new york,times,serif;"> Hong from DOE/LBNL will be provide a brief overview on the new and upcoming features in EnergyPlus!</span><br></p>
<p class="subtext" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; color: black;" lang="EN-AU">Day1
will be focused on developing building geometry with DesignBuilder, importing
from 2D-DXF and 3D gbXML import from CAD. The building envelope will be
optimised by studying zoning, efficient glazing, insulated construction
systems, window shading to study the impact on load calculation and predicted
PMV.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="subtext" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; color: black;" lang="EN-AU">Day2
will be focused on modelling systems using EnergyPlus. A simple
5-zone model will be exported from DesignBuilder to EnergyPlus. The
native IDF Editor will be used to develop HVAC Template options to generate a
VAV system. A series of HVAC design upgrades will be tested. These
could include, adding AHUs, supply air reset control, VSD drives, low turn down
ratios, low static pressure ductwork, or upgrading air cooled to water cooled
plant. </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";" lang="EN-AU"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="subtext" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">This
workshop is a great opportunity for training staff in predicting the
energy/greenhouse performance of buildings. These skills would be invaluable
in the current tough economic climate juxtaposed with increasing concern about
global warming. Projects that do proceed, either new or renovation, will
