spaces, you’re going to have a hard time coming up with accurate models –
especially outdoor conditions. That being said, I think CFD is probably the best
equipped for this. Your hourly analysis program (like E+, eQUEST etc) use a
lumped node method of calculation – so a space (or thermal zone) will
have a single temperature, a wall has a uniform temperature. In a mechanically
conditioned space, this is a reasonable approximation since most often the air
is mixed and not stratified. However, in passively conditioned spaces, there is
often a larger degree of thermal variation within spaces – in both
temperature and MRT, so it becomes necessary to study it with full-field
solution tools like CFD.

in cfd is to create temperature bins from your weather file and run separate
simulations for each bin. You can then approximate how many hours fall into
each bin. In most cases (especially the hotter hours), the temperature bins
will also correspond to times of day, so you might be able to get away with
doing a single sun position for each temp bin.

Hello

I am trying to understand the thermal comfort of the courtyard with varying
proportions, height, glazing (building glazing adjacent to courtyard) in
different climatic zones of India. I want to study the thermal comfort only
till 10 feet height of the courtyard from ground level (average operable
temperature of the courtyard zone till 10 feet height).

So few questions regarding model and simulation tools:
1) Which tool can model and simulate outdoor spaces (courtyard) ?
2) How to make a open courtyard as a zone? Courtyard is a part of building.
3) I need to make a virtual horizontal partition in the courtyard at a height
of 10 feet from ground floor.

I tried some simulation on Design Builder but could not get correct results.
I don't want to use CFD because I am interested in hourly thermal performance
of the courtyard and want to find the comfortable hours throughout the year.
Kindly help me.

Thanks
