Ramana ... I am an architect and PhD candidate in urban planning at UIC,
with a research interest in urbanized ecosystems. I have been developing
a methodology for assessing energy, material and information flows of
urbanized areas, based primarily on that used by the natural sciences
(ecology) and industrial ecology. This entails such tools as LCA
and input-output analysis, along with agent-based modeling,
modeling/simulation, and GIS spatial and network analysis.<br><br>
I often use footprint calculations for a quick and simple assessment of a
study area (block, neighborhood, city), so as to establish a preliminary
baseline during the inventory phase. As these footprint calculations tend
to be over-simplifications of the study area, at some point I know that a
more detailed database and assessment will need to be competed, which is
very time intensive. I have not come across any software that allows one
to perform this on a spatial scale of an urban area, but would welcome
any info on this topic.<br><br>
