<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>I would suggest that a mechanical
penthouse is not a floor when determining baseline system type as the presence
of the penthouse is for the equipment that could otherwise be packaged rooftop
equipment in the baseline building. If the penthouse is not cooled and
heated by the forced air system, then if there is some economic break-point for
“tall” vs “short” buildings the penthouse wouldn’t
tip the building into the tall category.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Also, is it less than 5% of the
building gross floor area and/or wall area? That’s the level at
which the standard doesn’t require a separate description for an envelope
wall type, maybe that could be extended to the significance of including the
penthouse in system selection?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Obviously, if it was an occupied
penthouse served by the system under consideration and greater than 5% of the
gross floor area, then I would count it as a floor.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>These are my thoughts, as I actually
have this same question in reverse for a basement mechanical room and would
like to hear what others have to say.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

the baseline building system is selected based on building area and the number
of floors. Does anyone know if a Penthouse is considered a floor? From the
A90.1 definitions, it appears that the Penthouse should be included in the
gross floor area, but whether the Penthouse should be considered in defining
the baseline building system type is unclear. For a 120,000 SF building that
has 5 floors and a Penthouse and purchased heat, the baseline system could be
System 5 if the Penthouse is not counted as a floor or System 7 if the
Penthouse is included. Can anyone help clarify this?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
