[Bldg-sim] "Maslow's" hierarchy of calibration

This might be more specific advice for university members of this group looking at calibrating a model from a campus, but usually kicking around somewhere on the site there will be a weather station logging data. Either from the estates team itself, a particular research/teaching department (geography and meteorology departments can't resist a good weather station).

A quick email to the estates teams usually will yield the right contact you need to speak to.

Data might require some fiddling around with and cleaning up, but the logged historic data can be really helpful when synced correctly with your sensor data.

Cheers,

Owen

There are high-resolution free data sources now for MYs (others call them AMYs), including:

ERA5-Land from Europe's ECMWF (https://www.ecmwf.int/en/era5-land)
(Reanalysis data from 1950 to present at 9 km resolution)

If you want ERA5 data in EPW, Oikolab (https://oikolab.com<https://oikolab.com/>) provides data for a fee.

NOAA NCEI ISD Integrated Surface Data (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-station/integrated-surface-database)
(Global database of weather station-based data from 1900 to present, replaced soon by GHCN.)

NOAA NCEI GHCN Global Historical Climate Network (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/global-historical-climatology-network-hourly)
(Global database replacing the ISD, more extensive data, fixed format)

Climate.OneBuilding (https//:climate.onebuilding.org<http://climate.onebuilding.org/>) uses a combination of ISD and ERA5 for its TMYx -- new data through 2023 for more than 20,000 stations globally coming soon.

Hi Holly,

That’s an interesting one. Before access to much improved, higher quality AMY data calibration may have been undertaken against TMY or EWY data. If calibrating to monthly energy rather than hourly, presumably date-sensitivity and things like DST are not as big a deal?

I agree with you that dates are fundamental according the standards.

Chris

Chris,

This might be a no-brainer, but...

Calibration step one: ensure the weather file used corresponds to the dates of the measured data.

Best,

Holly
