Hello All,

This is a friendly reminder that the Integrated Design Lab is hosting a BSUG session on May 23rd. Our speaker this month is a former IDL employee Jacob Dunn.

Jacob Dunn grew up in Boise, Idaho (ASHRAE Climate Zone 5B), spent 3 years in New Orleans (2A), and in 2017 returned to the Pacific Northwest in Portland, Oregon (4C). He holds a Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Idaho and his professional background has pivoted between research, sustainability consulting, education, and architecture.

Project StaSIO is a website designed to help designers articulate and advocate the value of early performance modeling. It does this by crowd sourcing the most compelling, beautiful, and informational performance graphics and case studies from the simulation community. The works are then displayed in a website that allows a user to navigate by various filters like the ASHRAE 209 cycle, type of investigation, inputs/outputs, tools, etc.

Description:

Project StaSIO is a website designed to help designers articulate and advocate the value of early performance modeling. It does this by crowd sourcing the most compelling, beautiful, and informational performance graphics and case studies from the simulation community. The works are then displayed in a website that allows a user to navigate by various filters like the ASHRAE 209 cycle, type of investigation, inputs/outputs, tools, etc. Perhaps most importantly, each graphic upload contains info from the contributor of not only how the graphic was made---but how it influenced the design process. The website is currently undergoing a makeover with funding from the Department of Energy to get it ready to support the 2nd annual Project Stasio competition (check out the winners from the first round here: https://www.projectstasio.com/new-page-4).

Bio:
Jacob Dunn
Jacob Dunn grew up in Boise, Idaho (ASHRAE Climate Zone 5B), spent 3 years in New Orleans (2A), and in 2017 returned to the Pacific Northwest in Portland, Oregon (4C). He holds a Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Idaho and his professional background has pivoted between research, sustainability consulting, education, and architecture. After spending a year in London with ARUP's Foresight Innovation and Incubation group, Jacob finished his degree and started working at the University of Idaho's Integrated Design Lab (IDL). At the IDL, he specialized in consulting through architectural simulation, conducted research on energy efficiency, and taught various graduate-level architecture courses. Jacob used simulation on a daily basis for both architectural and engineering analysis, and across a broad spectrum of building types in both new and existing structures. After four years of being a Research Scientist, he was recruited out of Idaho to Eskew+Dumez+Ripple (EDR) and tasked with enabling evidenced-based design and simulation analysis to their award-winning design firm. At EDR, Jacob worked with design teams to explore the link between aesthetics and performance through simulation and a scientific approach to sustainability. Now at the Portland office at ZGF, Jacob splits his time between coordinating sustainability practices at the leadership level while providing technical assistance and training across ZGF’s multiple offices.
